Art Workshops & courses

Welcome to paint Finland’s largest coloring book in the scenic surroundings of Kalajoki on July 1st from 4–6 PM!

This event is part of the Kalajoki 500 Years celebrations and Yle’s Let’s Play Pikkukakkonen event in Jokipuisto Park, in the town center.

Finland’s largest coloring book is a community art workshop developed by MeWeArt in 2017. Since then, large-scale coloring book pages have been painted dozens of times across Ostrobothnia. This colorful workshop, suitable for all ages, is now being brought back by popular demand. Come and create art in a relaxed, easy-going atmosphere!

The workshop is organized in cooperation with MLL Kalajoki and is supported by the City of Kalajoki. Participation is free of charge!

Meripäiväkirjat (Sea Diaries)
August 14–16, 12–3 PM
Roos House, Pitkänsillankatu 39
Free entry

During the second week of August, the courtyard of Roos House will be transformed into Meripäiväkirjat—an immersive art installation created over four open workshops. In these sessions, hand-embroidered trousseau sheets from previous generations will gain new, colorful stories along their lace hems. The creative work will be accompanied by a maritime soundscape and video projections, as well as excerpts from the diaries of Alma Hongell, who once sailed the seas.

Meripäiväkirjat is a community artwork open to everyone—regardless of age. The workshops are held in Finnish, English, and Spanish. They are free of charge, and no advance registration is required. Drop by to take part, paint, and be inspired! The work will be on display and constantly evolving from Wednesday to Saturday—you can also come and admire it outside of workshop hours.

Open workshops in the Roos House courtyard:

  • Thu, Aug 14, 12–3 PM

  • Fri, Aug 15, 12–3 PM

The Poiju Project invites you to a free art therapy workshop, designed especially for immigrants but open to all. This empowering and participatory session uses colors and images as tools for self-expression and conversation. The goal is to support participants’ mental well-being, strengthen a sense of community, and provide a safe space for exploring personal feelings and thoughts.

The workshop lasts three hours, including cleanup. The final 20 minutes are reserved for open discussion, or, if preferred, quiet reflection and writing. We accept 12–15 participants to ensure a personal experience for each. All necessary materials (paints, brushes, paper, and other art supplies) are provided.

Workshop Structure:

  • Introduction: Welcome, presentation of the workshop, and creating a safe space – color exercise as part of the greeting.

  • Art-making: Participants use a variety of colors and techniques to create their own artworks.

  • Discussion: Group conversation inspired by the images and colors, sharing thoughts and emotions. Participation is voluntary—no one is required to speak, but everyone is welcome to comment and reflect on others’ work.

  • Closing: Summary and relaxation exercise.

Objectives:

  1. Empowerment – Participants can process emotions and experiences through art.

  2. Self-expression – Encouragement to express freely through colors and images, without the pressure of verbalizing.

  3. Community – A safe space to share experiences and foster a sense of belonging.

The Most Sensory Painting Workshop of Summer 2025 – Kalajoki, August–September

This summer, the Havula courtyard in Kalajoki will host a truly sensory painting experience.

Embark on a flavour journey through the worlds of wine, tea, and coffee, accompanied by both savoury and sweet tasting paths. We will paint not only with acrylics but also with the very delicacies we taste. You will also learn how to stretch a canvas onto wooden stretcher bars.

Welcome to a delicious and intuition-awakening painting journey in good company!

Workshop fee: €70 – includes all materials for both painting and the European wine estate tasting experience. This summer, we will also taste and paint with blueberry and lemon, beetroot and turmeric. Your artwork can be the result of playful experimentation and living in the moment, or a carefully planned decorative piece created with the guidance of a colour expert.

This workshop is suitable for all adults interested in creativity and self-discovery. ❤️

Location: Plassi, Kalajoki (ask for details – the event will be held privately at the old Sarma Forge).

The exact schedule will be announced in the third week of August.

Artist - teacher

Sannamari Prittinen

I have been working as an art teacher at every educational level, from institutes to universities, since 2001. Teaching art is reciprocal and inspiring for me—my artistic journey has grown alongside people of all ages while painting, drawing, sculpting, and inventing new techniques in the wild and idea-filled world of contemporary art. I enjoy teaching classical art and methods of image construction as well. I emphasize observation and intuition in image-making. I love working with people of all ages, and I am also interested in the interaction with animals in the artistic process. I am able to provide instruction in Finnish, English, and Spanish.
